Between 1898 and 1906, the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad purchased approximately 1300 new narrow gauge gondolas from American Car & Foundry for use on its extensive three-foot gauge system in Colorado. Delivered in at least six different installments and with subtle design variations, the new cars replaced an array of well-used and worn out gondolas, and became the mainstay of the railroad’s 20th Century coal-hauling fleet, many lasting to the end of operations.
