Davenport Switcher Locomotive

Davenport Locomotive Works of Davenport, IA, produced all manner of industrial locomotives. These included steam (both conventional and fireless), gas and diesel mechanicals, hydraulic, and electric drives. They ranged in size from 4 to 112 tons. In the early 1950’s, they purchased the H.K. Porter company. All production ended a few years later, however.

R.M.I.’s 2½” scale models are based on Davenport’s 25-35 ton units. These locomotives are built in both 0-4-0 and 0-6-0 configurations as were the originals. Our units are offered in both electric and gas / hydraulic versions. The electric locos have two of our industrial motor / gear box assemblies, and our 160 amp power module. These units are exceptionally smooth and powerful. The gas / hydraulic models feature a 5½ hp Honda industrial engine with electric starting, low oil monitor, combo tach/hour meter standard. The drive system utilizes a hydrostatic transmission, and includes a thermostatically controlled oil cooler.

As with all R.M.I. all products, the locomotive structure is all steel, with a real riveted cab. These units are intended for serious work and extended duty applications.
