Narrow Gauge Switching Locomotives |

2.5" and 3.75" Scale Electric, Gas, Propane or Diesel Switching Locomotives |

RMI is proud to introduce 8 classic, American-style, industrial locomotives. These finely detailed miniatures are ideally suited for switching and local operations. They are fabricated from steel bar and laser-cut steel plate and sheet. Parts are assembled with individually formed solid steel rivets and scale hardware. All doors and access panels are prototypically hung with miniature continuous hinge. Also true to the originals, louvers are punched and formed on correctly scaled custom tooling. These locomotives are available with 2 or 3 axles or 2-truck (B-B) configuration. On each model, all drive wheels are connected with side rods and have individual spring suspension for best weight distribution. The resulting locos exhibit exceptional adhesion and tremendous pulling power. Different models have mounting positions for 2, 4, or 6 group 22 deep cycle batteries, allowing long run days with heavy loads. All locomotives utilize our proprietary motor/gearbox assemblies. The power for these units is provided by one or more muscular, 4" diameter, low RPM/high torque permanent magnet motors. These domestically produced motors are rated at 5/8 horsepower continuous duty (up to 3 HP intermittent). All motors have 4 brushes ensuring low current density, long brush life, and very quiet operation. Their low RPM and high torque allow the use of low ratio gear boxes for easy back driving when in regenerative/dynamic braking mode. Depending on the model and selected options, a locomotive may have 1, 2, 3 or 4 motors. The gear boxes have a 7/8" output shaft that also serves as the drive axle. Inside the box are two large, tapered roller bearings. The worm gear is hardened steel, driving a hobbled and shaved bronze drive gear. These are industrial boxes meant for heavy, continuous duty. Each locomotive is completely wired except for the installation of customer supplied batteries. A Model 21 hand-held controller is standard, (other controller options are shown elsewhere in this catalog). Additional options include a solid state sound system. This unit not only accurately simulates the engine sound, but also reproduces the sounds of the air release, brake release, horn and bell. All sounds are played through multiple speakers, and are coordinated to the engine's throttle settings, giving the most realistic possible operation. On factory painted locomotives, the upper body, hood, cab, etc. are available in black, blue, gray, green, maroon, orange, red, and yellow. The frame and running gear are black from the neck down. Please call for information on custom colors and paint schemes. RMI has made every effort to produce locomotives that are exceptional examples of custom model craft. They are simple to operate and maintain, extremely powerful and robust, and ready to run at the throw of a switch In addition to the original 8 switching locomotives, RMI also manufactures electric powered and hand driven speeders, MOW (maintenance of way) locomotives and below the RMI "Legend" series of highly detailed switching locomotives of which some are available in RMI's E scale (3.75") with up to 15 inch track gauge. Contact us for your switching locomotive needs, we will have something that will fit both your requirements as well as budget.
